Thank you for this account David, it has been the most throughout-provoking of this series.

The Roman/Venetian interface is indeed worth exploring further. Of course, for Raphael many would be content to leave it with Sebastiano - though the link between Giorgione, Raphael and Fra Bartolomeo has not been adequately addressed either.

The (former) traditional attribution of Judith to Raphael has proved the affinity for observers to resonate between Giorgione and Raphael. If it could be more clearly demonstrated both Giorgione and Raphael added to their knowledge and practise of colouring from Fra Bartolomeo, then some of the similarities could perhaps be accounted for.

Interestingly, Meyer zur Capellen's recent (and ongoing) Catalogue Raisonne features a "rejected attributions" section - hence one would feel his project has an impetus to address every Raphael claim on its own merits?

Kind Regards
H

Thanks H,

There's probably going to be an extra section for outstanding topics, points raised etc. It might be a good idea to tackle the Judith connection there- but that's probably a month off, as this is taking time to do.

I agree about rejected att, lost, problem attributions in Capellen. It's more traditional though- you don't see these sections in catalogues much these days. I'ver got my own theory about that- but I'll leave it for now.
