But a large part of the point about 'Panofsky, Warburg et al' was not for art historians to 'know their Warburg', but rather simply to emulate their vastness of erudition. Theory, the jumping off into reflection about something larger than a particular object itself, (and I was a teenage lacanian myself...) is perfectly interesting with its own set of norms, but the more norms that it places its own path as a means of determining the standard of execution the better.

Few theoretically minded arts historians possess vastness, and carefullness, of learning with which to make their theory anything less than jejune recyclings of their appointed maitre.
