Very interesting! I had heard of Lorenzetti but not taken the time to have a closer look.

As for the political side of things, as you know I've said my bit on that already - and can only hope that the ratio of action:analysis tips in favour of the former on the side of the people it is affecting.

Also, well done on integrating the link within widget. See, being a web warrior isn't so hard!!

Hi H,

Lorenzetti is one of the hidden stars of the early renaissance. Sienese art has been neglected for decades, and even when it appears in exhibitions, it's not handled well.

Fine with the no- politics stance. I'm not trying to solicit political responses- just using art history to alert people to the state of things over here. Besides, you've done more than enough with your recent post, which is generating a debate about related issues.

David,

Washington's Blog posted this important discussion a couple of days ago:

"Ben Bernanke has said that the Fed [that is, the American Federal Reserve Corporation] is trying to promote inflation, increase lending, reduce unemployment, and stimulate the economy. However, the Fed has arguably - to some extent - been working against all of these goals."

I'm startled by how elegantly and succinctly Lorenzetti captures the essence of exactly this problem. Of course, I shouldn't be. We learn a great deal from representations of the past if we're paying attention.

I just emailed a heads-up to 'George': let's see if your discussion makes a cameo appearance over on Washington's Blog. I think it might (and should).

Thanks Paula.

I've book marked the Washington blog, but let me know if Lorenzetti appears on the site.

I'm checking in to offer today's satirical contribution, "The Ancient Subprime Tarot" (more Rowlandson than Hogarth, only medieval) courtesy of the WilliamBanzai7 Blog, wherein it is posited that

"WHAT WE NEED IS A CRITIQUE OF VISUAL CULTURE THAT IS ALERT TO THE POWER OF IMAGES FOR GOOD AND EVIL"
