Wow, bizarre that an American bank is funding this makeover project. You've brought up some interesting ideas about a declining British heritage. I'm trying to think about how this could interpret on the American end: perhaps the declining value (and esteem) of the dollar? I think the dollar is not really "almighty" anymore. It seems like Merrill Lynch could be trying to establish a presence in stronger economies (that use the pound or the Euro). Or perhaps this grant could be viewed as a shift towards globalism. Hmm.

But I think you're onto something with your Tate Modern idea. Wouldn't that be a more appropriate gesture, especially for a couple that studied art history together?

I'd never read about the Banksy comparison. How funny!
