I promised to give a short overview of the exhibitions coming up in 2011. Before the new term kicks in and my blogging time is severely curtailed, I’d better make good on that promise.
The year kicks off with a exhibition of 19th century graphic work encompassing all generations of the Pre-Raphaelite movement; artists include John Ruskin, Elizabeth Siddal and Simeon Solomon.
Jan Gossaert’s Renaissance, National Gallery, 23rd February- 30th May.
I don’t know about you but I’ve already got the Jan Gossaert (Mabuse) exhibition plotted into my schedule. The National Gallery hosts this show in late February. It’s on transfer from the Metropolitans, NY, and judging by what I’ve heard, it’s going to be well-worth seeing. I’ll be heading down there in early March.
Jan Gossaert, Adoration of the Kings, London, NG. |
A Collector’s Eye: Cranach to Pissarro, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, 18th February to 15th May.
I like exhibitions about collectors and taste. This easily fits the bill: a comprehensive survey of art in the Schorr Collection “assembled by private collector David J. Lewis for his family interests.”
Watteau’s Drawings: Virtuosity and Delight, Royal Academy of Arts, 12th March- 5th June.
J. A. Watteau, Head of a Woman, Hermitage, c. 1710. |
One exhibition I’ve been looking forward to ever since it was announced has been this, an event showcasing the beautiful drawings of the rococo artist Jean-Antoine Watteau. Sad and lonely, an outcast who painted fete galantes, a completely new genre,Watteau was also an incomparable draftsman. With over 80 works on paper, this promises to be special.
Life, Legend, Landscape: Victorian Drawings and Watercolours, Courtauld Institute, Feb 17-May 15
The second exhibition of 19th century drawings, this time at the Courtauld. It will be interesting to compare the aims and contents of this specialist event with the Birmingham show, as well as last year’s Pre-Raphaelites and Italy, held at the Ashmoleon. At the same time as Brian Sewell asks, in an exhibition note, what does “Victorian” actually mean in this context. Judging from the artists on display, I would say the Courtauld are using it as a synonym for the PRB.
John Martin, Tate Britain, 21st September-15th January, 2012.
John Martin, The Bard, 1817, Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle. |
After Turner, John Martin is the next greatest romantic painter. Who can forget his Welsh Bard about to leap of a cliff in defiance of the English? This exhibition is co-organised with the Laing in Newcastle, which boasts the greatest collection of Martin’s art. You want apocalypse in your art- look no further than this tempestuous painter from Newcastle.
twombly and poussin: arcadian painters, 29th June-25th September, Dulwich Picture Gallery.
This exhibition has come straight out of left-field. I have no idea who the hell is behind this, but take it from a Poussin scholar who has tried to introduce new ideas into the field; you may be riding for a massive fall. I can already see the critics sharpening their darts and dipping them in poison. I welcome new approaches in Poussin, but know from experience how insanely defensive the field has become.
Art for the Nation: Sir Charles Eastlake at the National Gallery, 27th July- 30th October.
Sir Charles Eastlake, John Prescott Knight, R.A., 1857. |
Eastlake is the master-builder of the renaissance collection at the N.G. At last he gets an exhibition celebrating his erudition, taste and vision. One of the N.G.’s free summer shows, it’ll be interesting to see what selections are made to honour the first- and most important- director of the museum.
Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan, 9th November 5th February, 2012.
Leonardo da Vinci, Madonna of the Rocks, London, NG, 1495-1508. |
To cap the year, a true blockbuster billed as an “unprecedented exhibition – the first of its kind anywhere in the world. “ In the light of current rows about loans, the next section of the endorsement is interesting…"brings together sensational international loans never before seen in the UK.” One thing is for sure: if loan disputes are resolved, this show will be really worth visiting.
There’s more of course, but that’ll do for now. Happy exhibition-going.
I also like exhibitions about collectors and their private tastes. I would love to see the works assembled by private collector David J. Lewis for his family interests. But Cranach to Pissarro covers a wide territory, so I wonder if there was any plan to Mr Lewis' collecting.

The Gossaert exhibition looks especially interesting! I need to get myself a ticket to the UK! :)
Your comment about the poisonous darts was very funny. I'll be interested to see what you think of the exhibition. (I gather that you will be going - if only to deliver your own poisonous dart, right?).

Hels- It is very broad for a collector. Collections are usually specialized, not eclectic. It'll be interesting to see the rationale, if any, behind Lewis's collection.
M- Gossaert is going to be one of the best shows of the year, next to Leonardo.
I might leave the sniping to the newspaper critics. Dulwich is a long way to go for Poussins I know v well; and to see a modern artist who's not exactly great. Still, as it's Poussin, I shd keep an eye on it- we'll see.

It is generally acknowledged that success requires diligence. Without effort, there could be no accomplishments.

While the value of his wife's life was not an element of damages and was not a proper subject for final argument, the value of the surviving spouse's loss of his wife's companionship and protection, as well as his mental pain and suffering as a result of her wrongful death was a proper measure of damages under the Wrongful Death Statute, specifically Fla. Stat. ch. 768.21(2); the jury argument made by surviving spouse's counsel, taken in its proper context, did not ask the jury to place a monetary value on the wife's life, but rather on her surviving spouse's loss. Case No. 78,573Trodyne is engaged in the design, manufacture, and sale of aircraft instruments. In response to an invitation from Sikorsky Aircraft in 1962, Trodyne submitted a design for a pressure sensing device intended to give early warning of fatigue cracks in rotor blades in order to prevent helicopter crashes. The first design was approved and 100 units were ordered. These units proved unsatisfactory and were returned to Trodyne. After several months of additional research, a redesigned unit, Model 1201, was submitted to Sikorsky and proved satisfactory. Due to the production of Model 1201, the plaintiff enjoyed significant commercial success. The percentage of sales by the plaintiff of these pressure sensing devices increased steadily. A patent was applied for, but neither this patent nor the device itself disclosed the manufacturing techniques of the plaintiff. Instead, they remained trade secrets.Plumbing Contractors moved for summary judgment against Colony National Insurance as surety for the $ 5,902 retainage due and owing by Coral-Tech. The trial court granted Plumbing Contractors' motion for summary judgment and held Coral-Tech and Colony National, jointly and severally liable for the sum of $ 982.07. Additionally, the court granted Plumbing Contractors' motion to confirm arbitration and for determination of entitlement to attorney's fees. The court reserved jurisdiction to determine the amount following an evidentiary hearing.Greenman & Manz and Franklin D. Greenman, for appellee.Motions for judgment notwithstanding the verdict, like motions for directed verdict, should be resolved with extreme caution. In considering such a motion, all inferences of fact should be construed most strictly in favor of the non-moving party. A jury verdict must be sustained if it is supported by competent, substantial evidence. A trial court is authorized to grant a motion for judgment notwithstanding the verdict only if there is no evidence or reasonable inferences to support the opposing position.http://article-buzz.com.aiep.info/uncovering-methods-of-bankruptcy http://www.clearchannelboard.com/the-variety-of-no-hassle-methods-for-bankruptcy/ January 20, 1981, FiledI concur in result, however, with the quashal of the district court's remand for further proceedings fixing attorney's fees in Lindsay v. Travelers Indemnity Co.Initially, we dismiss as without merit Michigan Mutual's additional claim that the $ 15,000,000 figure representing full value of damages should be reduced to present value before being used as a basis for lien reduction. Nothing in the record here indicates that the trial court, prior to making its findings, failed to reduce all figures to present value.7. Petitioner's attorney's fees are set at $ ____, which shall be paid to ____, and her court costs are taxed at $ ____, both of which respondent shall pay within ____ days. While the district court recited, at the broadest level, the relevant legal test for determining mootness in a voluntary cessation case, and although it acknowledged that "courts are more likely to trust public defendants on a voluntary cessation issue than private defendants," it nevertheless concluded that on the "undisputed record," the instant case was moot. In so concluding, the district court did not acknowledge, much less apply to this record, any of the basic factors that both the Supreme Court and this Court have found important in determining mootness where a private defendant has voluntarily ceased the conduct at issue. Specifically, we have found relevant at least the following three factors: (1) whether the challenged conduct was isolated or unintentional, as opposed to a continuing and deliberate practice; (2) whether the defendant's cessation of the offending conduct was motivated by a genuine change of heart or timed to anticipate suit; and (3) whether, in ceasing the conduct, the defendant has acknowledged liability. The application of these factors to this undisputed record yields the conclusion that it is not "absolutely clear that the allegedly wrongful behavior could not reasonably be expected to recur," Laidlaw, 528 U.S. at 189 (internal quotation marks omitted), and therefore that this case is not moot.
