Why this aversion to cleaning? The grime was not in the original painting. I know that past "restorations" have been botched, but I can't believe that the Met would not do a good job.

They certainly are not out to increase the value of the painting.

I hear what you're saying Frank, but I think there's no need to clean it; it looks fine the way it is. I'm not saying they'd deliberately damage it, but the risk is still there. Why chance it?

As for the Met..., well, the curator doesn't inspire confidence with his remarks about basing an important restoration issue on taste.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one.
