Well, summer term has started, but I’m determined to keep up blogging.
I’ve got a few things in preparation including more on Italian renaissance art, Poussin, connoisseurship and the culture of distraction, and yet more on the Malmesbury Judgment of Paris. I also plan to create another blog for a Poussin connoisseurship project that looks at problematic pictures in the Public Catalogue Foundation database and other on-line resources. It looks like on-line connoisseurship is coming into its own. Frank DeStefano has just started a series looking at the cataloguing of Giorgione by two noted scholars, Pignatti and Pedrocco; and Bendor Grosvenor is successfully using crowdsourcing to identify individuals in portraits on the PCF/BBC Your Paintings site.
Meanwhile, here’s something I prepared earlier. A piece for the Melbourne Art Network on the above picture in my local gallery: Giuseppe Caletti’s David with the Head of Goliath. Giuseppe Caletti, David with the Head of Goliath, c. 1650, Birmingham Museums and Art Galleries, oil on canvas, 73.7 x 88.3 cm.
Stay tuned.
