Northern Renaissance Exhibition, Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace.

Well, I don’t know how this one slipped under the radar. Maybe I was too focused on northern painting in continental museums, but this forthcoming show reminds me of the rich holdings in this country. It starts on 2nd November.

I was invited to the preview, but had to decline- as I’m teaching a course on…you’ve guessed it-  northern renaissance art!

The 15th and 16th centuries were a time of dramatic change in Northern Europe.  Monarchs vied for territorial power, religious reformers questioned the central tenets of the church and scholars sought greater understanding of their world.  Against this backdrop, artists produced works of extraordinarily diverse subject matter and superb technical skill.  This exhibition brings together over 100 works by the greatest Northern European artists of the period.  Among the highlights are prints and drawings by Albrecht Dürer, mythological paintings by Lucas Cranach the Elder, and preparatory drawings by Hans Holbein the Younger displayed alongside the finished oil portraits.

Holbein the Younger’s wonderful Portrait of  Derich Born is a well-chosen image to advertise the event.

I agree that Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528), Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553), and Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543) were amongst the finest artists alive.

But what makes a work Renaissance? The date in which it was painted (eg 1480-1600) or its content (i.e man as the centre of all things, not God).

For those interested in the works of Holbein and Durer, it might be worth mentioning that two significant discoveries of lost works now restituted by both artists, will be revealled in the first half of 2013. The first being Holbein's meticulous later Drawing of Derich Born, (above), probably intended for an unrealised portrait in slightly older age.

The second is a particularly important early 1502 Albrecht Durer panel featuring "Three Saints". Its date has likewise been confirmed by Dendrochronology by Prof. Dr. Peter Klein. This major work was used as the model some 35 years later, for another great Renaissance artist's excellent fresco version in a famous Italian institution. Fascinatingly, there are direct earlier links to Durer and this great city.

However this situation had previously remained completely unknown, as the later 1537 work had always been assumed the original by that Master.
These important new research findings will be published in Volume two of the series "The Secrets of Leonardo da Vinci", realeased by VegaScans.
