Re the use of photographs mentioned in the Costamagna review, the students in the History of Art department at Oxford have a class with Professor David Ekserdjian, this year’s Slade Professor at Oxford, on the historical importance of the department’s photographs of Michelangelo’s frescoes. These are the Braun Studio’s set of photographic prints of the 1860s. They also discuss the significance of colour v b/w too, another of Costamagna’s points.
Never neglect the role of photographs in art history.
